EDITORIAL & INFOGRAPHIC

The Daily Orange

An independent, nonprofit student newspaper published in Syracuse, New York. The paper was first published in 1903 and went independent in 1971. The editorial content of The D.O. is entirely run by Syracuse University students, with no oversight from the university.

DESCRIPTION
During my time at the D.O. I worked with both the bi-weekly printed newspaper and the digital content that was being published 24/7. I started as a Design Editor and became the Digital Design Director while I was there.

OBJECTIVE
The goals I set while working for the D.O. were to integrate more infographics into the printed editions, create interactive scrolling content for the social media accounts, and to bring a more consistent voice to the paper using their brand guide.

INSTAGRAM ICON DESIGN
Featured on The Daily Orange Instagram account, I developed a clear icon to represent the story highlight for each section of the newspaper.

INSTAGRAM TYPOGRAPHY
During my time at The Daily Orange, I implemented the use of The DO’s sans serif typeface, Benton Sans, for Instagram posts. Using a sans serif supports readability and accessibility, while creating consistency across media channels and The DO brand.

INSTAGRAM STORY DESIGN
I worked to create a clean template to highlight stories on The Daily Orange Instagram, leaning on the color system developed for each section.

THE EXPLORATION
Creating a solution comes from many sketches, iterations, prototypes, and best of all, mistakes. With constant feedback and analyzation at each step of the work, the process yields great results. Here’s a peek at some of the steps I flew between while working at The Daily Orange.
